What is the difference between a long vowel sound and short vowel sounds?

It depends on the language. In some languages (like ancient Greek and Latin), long vowels are actually extended to a longer duration than short vowels. In English, long vowels (with the exception of u) are pronounced as diphthongs, meaning that they consist of two distinct vowel sounds compressed into a single syllable.
