Crock pot is burning up our dip!?

We have a little dipper crock pot and it has no on, it says on the box "great for dips" so we put cheese in it for queso....and 1 hour later..the edges are buring and its getting chunky? i just unplugged it ... but this crock pot has no settings...any suggestions? on how not to burn it up ?
